Adil's final fan fiction

The Descent: Survival

I stared at her blood soaked pendant. It's vivid glow hypnotizing me. Frozen. A sharp pain jolted up my body, I almost collapsed in place. A throbbing sensation ran through me as I staggered to find my footing. I looked down in horror. Sarah had plunged a pickaxe directly through my ankle; it went numb as the blood ran down my leg. I couldn't scream. I gazed back up to see her staring through me, unable to comprehend what had just happened. My first instinct was not to remove it. But to strangle her. "You ruined my life, you deserve to die down here!'' she yelled. I leapt at her. Striking her across the cheek as we both hit the ground with a heavy thud. She swung wildly but couldn't connect with my face, we crashed against the cavern rocks. I pushed her off me, gasping. We both stared one another down, as we tried to compose ourselves. I couldn't fight with the pickaxe lodged in my leg, if I were to have any chance, it had to go.

I started to rattle as my fingers lowered towards the handle. I gripped the cold steel. For all the traversing I had done, it had been my guide down these thick and misty corridors, now it could be the end of me. I took a pause that felt like eternity, a gaping crater in my flesh. Squirming. One swift pull was all it would take, but I couldn't muster the courage. If I didn't, I would quickly bleed out. As a tear ran down my cheek, I clasped the handle tightly and pulled with all my might. I screamed as the pickaxe flew out of my leg, the bellowing soared throughout the halls of the cavern. Cracking against the rocks and crevices. Dead silence. I took pressure off the leg and raised the blade towards my chest, ready and willing, to do what was necessary. Sarah watched on seething. I slowly began taking steps towards her, my resolve unshaken. I would return her gracious favour. A deafening screech rattled the passages and we stopped dead in our tracks. Death lowering the curtain on both of us.

"They've found us, run." I pleaded.

"I'm not going anywhere with you, murderer"

"All I wanted was to take you and the girls on an adventure, I had no idea those fucking things would be down here"

"Because of you they are all dead, but that wasn't enough for you, you took my husband and my son away from me!"

"Don’t you dare put their lives on my head! I can’t pretend that I know how you feel, the accident could have happened to anyone! You were never there for him and we became close, I messed up. I was going to tell you but I couldn’t find the words.”

“I will never forgive you,” she whispered.

“SKREET!” I pushed her aside and swung the pickaxe as hard as I could. It slid right through the creature’s temple, it roared in pain as it was stifled backwards. Swinging its claws wildly, almost cutting my arm open in the process. It roared as it stumbled into a corner, not even a moment to breathe; I strode towards it, removing the blade in a swift movement and swinging downwards to finish what I had started. One last screech and it slowly whimpered to silence.

Sarah came to my side, a knowing exchange, before she slipped her arm around me. Her pendant crashing against my shoulder. I lit the flash light in front of us. We paced forwards.

Winding narrow paths of all varieties, beautiful patterns etched by the rock formation on every surface. Moving in and out of corridors with no sense of direction or progress. Suddenly, dust began to filter to the ground. The passages ceiling rattled, as its surface was grazed. I threw my hand over Sarah’s mouth. Slowly tilting the flash light up. Arcs shimmered directly off the creature’s serpentine skin. A lucid dark blue. Scales rigidly covered its body, a flat nose between its glowing green eyes, dark claws like steak knives with rows of teeth that would make a shark blush. It didn't move, laying perfectly still. Then I realised. IT WAS BLIND! Only twitching in response to echoes, perfectly formed for survival in these caverns, evolved as a killing machine, our argument had drawn the first.

The fear on Sarah’s face was palpable. I motioned at her to throw a rock. I could feel her sweat on my palm. As it slid away from her face. She slowly leaned down to slip a rock into her hand. Cocking her arm back and hurling the rock as hard as she could in the direction we had come from. The creature twisted, before letting out a blood curdling roar. It dropped quietly to the ground on all fours, before scampering into the darkness.

There was no time to celebrate, or think for that matter, just onwards into the endless divide. I saw Sarah breaking internally, her composure could not hide her fear. Suddenly, a small beam of light in the distance. A lone beacon of hope. We trudged towards it. I lost my balance and fell, tugging Sarah down with me. The pickaxe flew into the sludge as I crashed into the flowing pit. My head dunked firmly under the turgid foam. I gripped the flash light as firmly as possible. As I came to my senses, I realised I was tasting blood. Flowing through my hair and nose. I flew upwards and gasped for air. Sarah quietly shuddering next to me. We gripped the edges of the pit straggling out. I rose to my feet and stepped forward, something shattered underneath my weight. Arrested by shock, I wiped blood off the flashlight, and swept round the room. Bones. Everywhere.

Dozens of glistening eyes. The circle of light to the far distance. The sun's rays peeking through. We were in their nest. Staring death in the face, with the remains of past failures as mementos scattered everywhere. They all stood, wailing. Sensing there next meal was close. We were doomed. I turned to Sarah, ready to whisper my final words.

She looked deeply into my eyes, throwing me her pendant. I knew what she was going to do, the thought made me nauseous.

"Sarah, don't you dare!"

"There is nothing left out there for me, run, save yourself"

She screamed at the top of her voice. The brutes flew forwards sending her hurtling into the bloody pit. As rows of beasts dove into the murk to get their fill. I dashed towards the light. Pushing rocks and bone out of my way, I turned to catch one lost glance, the creatures scrambling, shredding her flesh, her lone hand flew out of the bloody pit, I watched in silent agony. I continued thrashing at the rocks and began climbing to the surface, I was in limbo, dirt and rock surrounding me, I heard life, soothing light breeze, I pushed my hand through the dirt and felt the surface, and I finally fell out and landed on soft grass. Crying hysterically. I could not look anywhere but my hand, the pendant that she had thrown me. The words seared into my mind, engraved with a steady hand, "Love Each Day."

Final Fanfic

"THE CITY OF FORKS WELCOMES YOU"

As I drive past that ironic sign, I grasp the fact that I'm here and for one reason only, to find out the truth. But I never thought it would be this cold here.

I drive up into my Aunt Renee's driveway and I'm suprised but what I see. Trees, Bushes and no sign of a single soul. It suprises me how isolated and alone they are. I park the car and as I stood outside, I took a look at the house and it was breath-taking. As if I jumped into an episode of the MTV cribs. Hesitantly making my way to the porch, I knock on the front door and patiently wait. Turning around I admire the view and the fresh air that I seem to cant get enough of. Suddenly I hear the door behind me open and I turn. There stood my Aunt Renee. Beautiful brown hair that reached just below her shoulders, her big brown eyes, just like dad's and a smile that made you feel at home. "Elena? Elena Gilbert? What on earth are you doing here darling?" She reaches out for a long and embracing hug. "Hi Aunt Renee." I smile. "Um I decided to take your offer and come visit you here. Sorry for not calling first, I wanted to suprise you." Suprise you? Really Elena. Poor Aunt, little did she know I was only eager to come to ask questions, I totally forgot to call first. "Ah nonsense Elena your family. Come inside, you must be exhausted!"

We walk inside, and immediatly it feels like I entered Oprah's home. I imagine it would be something similar. Long glass windows, polished floors which are mirror-like, magnificent art on the walls painted by God knows who, breath taking interior and exterior designs that match like twins. Im in awe of it all. I wonder why dad never let me come here? Following beside my Aunt Renee, we arrive at the living room where my cousins Edward and Alice gathered. I take a look around, trying to familiarize myself with them and only after a second we exchange hugs and small talk. During dinner, we all tell stories about what's happened over the years we havent seen eachother. I enjoy them. They're company. I've missed this feeling of family, and being together. A wonderful vibe is in the air and we're all enjoying one anothers presence. Then Edward asks "So Elena, what brings you here? We all know your not here for small talk?" He was right. I wasn't. I'm on a mission. " Haha, you're right Ed." I look at everyone. "I'm here because I want to know the truth. I know that my parents accident WAS NO accident. So I came here in hopes that someone knows something, that I dont."

The room quickly goes quiet and they all look at one another as if they were keeping something from me. "Elena, your parent's passed away in a car accident. It wasnt anyone's fault. Maybe it was just an accident?" What? "It wasnt an accident! You know my dad was always careful when he was driving. There had to be something that had happe.."

*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*

Such loud knocks inturupt the tense conversation, but who could that be at this time of night? They all look at one another again, worried this time. As if they we're expecting someone. Aunt Renee stands and smiles at us all, "I'll get it." She leaves and the room is dead silent, only hearing Aunt Renee's footsteps. We all hear the door open. And suddenly a mans voice yells out,

"SHES HERE ISN'T SHE? DONT YOU DARE LIE TO ME! I HAVE A RIGHT TO SEE HER!"

As thats going on, the three of us sit at the table quiet and still, then in a split second a brown man stands at the doorway and stares right at me. I stare back but wondering who is this guy? And why does he want to see me so bad? Renee quickly chases after him and tells him to leave. Alice grabs me and pulls me towards the other room. Without breaking contact with the strange brown man staring at me, I yell out "What's going on? Who are you?" He stares right at me and doesn't say a word. He smiles at me, as if he knew me.

"You have your mothers eyes." Huh?
"Did you know my mother?" I ask in a demanding tone. "Who are you?"

Renee grabs his arm "Don't do this Billy." Billy, looks right at Renee. "How could you? How could you be so selfish. Everyone knows the truth, except her."
I jump in, "A right to know what?.. Would someone please tell me whats going on??"
The room is dead silent, and the strange man speaks. "I'm your father Elena."

"WHAT?" I couldnt believe what this man was saying? Is this a sick joke? I stare at him, then to my Aunt Renee. She doesnt seem to deny his bold words claiming to be my father. "Is this true?" My voice shakes. Aunt Renee seemed so shattered as if someone had just stolen the life right out of her.

 "Yes Elena, its true."

to be continued.

Fan Fiction Plan and Draft

The Descent: Survival

Genre:

Horror, Suspense.

Written style:

First person.

Plot:

The original film has a close group of female friends that go on adventures. They travel to Scotland for a get together. After a rafting trip, one of the girls Sarah. Has a car accident, killing her husband and child. She suspects her husband of having had an affair with one of her close friends Juno. Who quickly leaves during the proceedings. A year later the group assembles in America, on a planned spelunking trip which Juno has set in motion. They enter an unmanned cave, and get trapped. Only for Juno to confess, that it has never been navigated before. Inertia quickly kicks in. They realise they are not alone, when humanoid creatures, begin attacking and killing off the group. A face off happens between the girls, When Sarah confronts Juno about the adultery, before stabbing her with a pickaxe and leaving her to die in the cave. My fan fiction is an alternate version where the dispute is settled.

Description of characters

Juno - A strong and independent woman, the leader of the group, who has sent her close group of female friends to an unmanned cavern, to discover it, and name it after her close friend Sarah, in guilt for her affair with Sarah's husband.

Sarah - A bereaved young woman who has lost everything. Diving into the cavern in good faith, everyone closest to her is dying, she fights back and finally confronts Juno.

Setting:

My fan fiction happens entirely in the caverns, dark and desolate with cave dwellers lurking around every corner.

Intended Audience:

Teenagers and young adults, the tone is quite dark and the violence is gruesome, but the very humanistic element to the story, validates all the havoc.

Tension is a staple of this horror classic and it played a huge role in the genesis of the genre, this fan fiction uses a lot of vivid imagery and the isolation that Norman bates feels is what engages me. His neurosis and twisted relationship with his mother is a sight to behold.

Once again following through on the theme of isolation. I loved this particular piece because of the relationship between the brother and sister. The feelings of distance from humanity and reality play such an integral role, it has great resonance.

Interesting piece that details pack mentality with blunt brutality and clear progression. The details of the cues from the characters is excellent, and gives us clear indications of their behaviour and relation to one another with the slightest details.

Strong characters and a will to survive are themes that overflow throughout, detailing Rambo's stern and decisive exterior. The descriptions were not entirely to my liking but I enjoyed the conflict, and besides finding forsaken lovers, he has never had a battle with a female counterpart, so the possibilities played out well.

I love the way the author handled the characters in this alternate ending, and how it subverts expectations, it clearly shows a great understanding of the material, but can be heavy handed with its story telling in segments. With some polish and change of prose, it could be excellent.

I turned to her, fear lowering the curtain on both of us, "They've found us, run."

I went to grab her arm as I propelled forward, but she mechanically slapped it away. We flew through a passage, with the thought of dear life as our only saving grace. I couldn't keep her pace; the gap between us slowly crept larger. My leg had given out on me, even if I did manage to find cover this time. Eventually they would catch me. My cynicism got the better of me and I began to slow to a limp.  Sarah realising I was nowhere near her sight, in a hushed but frustrated tone began berating me. "Juno, we can't stop! We have to keep going" I sat in place, the darkness gently hugging me, allowing me to ease and accept my circumstances. I lone pole of light flickered in the distance. A slow patter descended towards me, it was Sarah. Holding our last flash light. She finally took her place standing over me, I could see unease throughout her being, the gaze of one looking at a wounded animal, contemplating whether to save a life, or place it out of it's suffering.
